Sunrise system

The sunrise (or phased registration) period is the period during which one can apply for a domain name on the basis of a prior right.

During the sunrise period public bodies and holders of certain rights (e.g. trademark holders) have the opportunity to apply for the registration of the corresponding .EU domain name. Applicants must be located within the European Community.

Contrary to the post-sunrise period (Land Rush), an applicant (through DNSeuropa.com) does not request to register a domain name but applies for a domain name that subsequently will be checked for compliance with the sunrise rules.

The sunrise period will consist of two consecutive phases each lasting two months:

The Sunrise 1 period is valid between 7 December 2005 and 6 February 2006.

The Sunrise 1 period is valid between 7 December 2005 and 6 February 2006.

During this phase, only domain names that correspond with:

  • The full name of a public body;
  • The acronym by which a public body is commonly known;
  • If applicable, the territory which is governed by a public body;
  • Registered community or national trademarks

can be applied for.
Other trademarks may be considered as “other prior rights” and consequently referred to Sunrise 2.

The Sunrise 2 period is valid between 7 February 2006 and 6 April 2006.

During this phase, domain names that correspond with:

  • The names listed for Sunrise Period 1;
  • Other rights that are protected under the national law of the member state where they are held such as company names, business identifiers, and distinctive titles of protected literary and artistic work;
  • Unregistered trademarks;
  • Trade names

can be applied for. Other domain names must be considered for the land Rush period.

What are the fees that are being charged during the Sunrise Periods?

The following fees will apply for Sunrise 1 & 2 applications. This fee covers the administrative costs for and during the validation process for one domain name. This fee does not include the yearly registration fee of the domain name (à 12,50 Euro/year):

  • Your domain request has been introduced and validated by EURid and has been accepted:
    FEE: 155,00 Euro excl vat
    (this is the normal procedure)

  • Your domain request has been introduced and validated by EURid and has been refused for whatever reason:
    FEE: 155,00 Euro excl vat
    (i.e. no proof of prior rights, …)

In case that your domain request has been introduced at EURid but has not been validated or verified (by EURid/PWC) for whatever reason, a refund of 70,00 Euro excl vat can be requested (i.e. the requested domain name was not available anymore, …). A refund will only be provided if the customer provides us with the IBAN and/or BIC code of his payment processor.

Summary of steps to follow to register during the Sunrise Period:

Register your domain name via our website and choose for Sunrise 1 or Sunrise 2.
After the payment via our website, you will receive an email from EURid, this email will contain a link to a PDF document. You will need to download this PDF document, complete it and mail it via the normal Postal Services to the indicated address within 40 days. DNSeuropa.com will not complete this document for you!
PriceWaterhouseCoopers will validate (or refuse) your application on behalf of EURid. PWC will strictly follow the regulations imposed by the European Community. The detailed regulations can be found on the website of EURid.

During the validation process, you can track the status of your application on the website of EURid via the whois module.
Once your domain name has been approved, a waiting period of 40 days is foreseen (the so called ‘quarantine’ period of the Sunrise period). During these 40 days, anyone can make objection against the decision via the “Alternative Dispute Resolution” (ADR).

The ADR for .EU domain names disputes will be provided by the Czech Arbitration Court in the 20 official languages of the European Union. For more information you can access the website of the Czech Arbitration Court for the .eu ADR at http://www.arbcourt.cz/adreu
After this period, the domain name will be available for your usage. If you require web hosting or other services for your domain name, we will be happy to assist you via our website on http://www.sitehosting.be or via info@sitehosting.be.

Note:

It is very important that your application (PDF paperwork) is accurate and follows the correct procedures (see link below for all specifications). The most important guidelines are summarized here:

  • Verify if you have prior rights to be eligible to participate in the Sunrise Periods (registered trademark, …);
  • Documents for the same domain name registration need to be mailed in once and at the same time (in the same envelope). Don’t forget to include proof of trademark or other documents;
  • Registrations of different domain names needs to be mailed separately (different envelope for different applications);
  • All papers needs to be on A4 or LETTER format, no other formats are allowed;
  • All pages needs to be numbered;
  • Don’t fold the papers, don’t staple them and neither use any means of glue
